Fine Woven Crafts by the Q’ero People of the Andes
Five hundred years after Spanish Conquistadors invaded South America and decimated the great Inka Empire, the Q’ero people survive in tiny villages that lie between 12,000 and 16,000 feet in altitude. The climate is cold all year. In these harsh and remote lands, little has changed for five centuries. Like all indigenous communities in Peru, the Q’ero face severe pressures regarding the fate of their ancestral lands, the survival of traditional practices, and their place in Peruvian society.
Building a High School in the Clouds
Our generous donors are funding the first high school in the ethnic Hapu Q’ero region of Peru. Children will no longer have to leave their families to attend secondary school. This new high school at 12,000 feet elevation in the Andes will bring relief to many families struggling to help their children get a basic education.
